The Martyr Is A Serial Killer
I was halfway through a glass of vintage Pinot on a private sun-drenched terrace in the Maldives when the universe forcibly unstitched itself and dragged me into a trashy melodrama. I was halfway through a glass of vintage Pinot on a private sun-drenched terrace in the Maldives when the universe forcibly unstitched itself and dragged me into a trashy melodrama.
Specifically, I was shoved into the frail, trembling body of a tragic romance heroine.
The mandate? Play the meek, self-sacrificing martyr who endures endless abuse with a tear in her eye and forgiveness in her heart.
I had to laugh. "Meek?" Honey, please. I don't possess a single delicate bone in my body.
Before this, I was a convicted murderer.
...
"Smack."
The sharp crack of flesh against flesh reverberated through the institutional tile of the high school restroom.
A stinging heat bloomed across my left cheek. I blinked, letting my vision snap into sharp focus. Three girls in prep-school blazers stood crowded around me. The ringleader was sporting smudged charcoal eyeliner, heavy lip gloss, and the smug, predatory sneer of a girl who had never once faced a real consequence.
She rolled her wrist with theatrical languor, spewing a steady stream of gutter-level obscenities.
"Ding."
"Host, please adhere to the scripted narrative to complete your assigned arc," a flat, synthesized voice chimed inside my skull.
Instantly, an avalanche of foreign memories tore through my mind. It was a classic, early-2000s trauma-porn novel. The female lead was practically a magnet for misery: viciously bullied at school, neglected and abused at home, and eventually cornered by the billionaire male lead, who would forcibly harvest one of her kidneys to save his dying childhood sweetheart. And the punchline? In the end, after all that blood and humiliation, she still fell into his arms for a so-called "happily ever after."
Right now, the plot had reached the inciting incident: the heroine steps in to protect a targeted classmate, only to have the bullies turn their fury on her—while the girl she saved quietly sharpens the knife for her back.
A masterpiece of absolute garbage.
"Fascinating narrative, isn’t it, Host?" the system purred smugly in my head. "I handpicked this tragic masterpiec—"
"It reads like a pile of warm dog shit," I cut in.
The system choked on its own code, falling into a stiff, bureaucratic silence before sputtering: "Host is strictly advised to follow protocol. Failure to achieve the HEA ending will result in immediate termination."
I hummed under my breath, noncommittal.
Across from me, the girl with the raccoon eyes slammed her palm against the metal stall door. "Hey, Virginia! Are you deaf, or did that slap knock your last two brain cells loose?"
She lunged forward, claw-like acrylics aiming straight for my hair.
I didn't even think. Muscle memory took over. I threw a counter-punch—sharp, clinical, and slightly heavier than I intended.
"Crack."
A bloody front tooth arced through the fluorescent-lit air and bounced against the porcelain sink.
The room went dead silent. The two lackeys froze, their jaws slack with horror. Brittany stumbled back, cupping her bleeding mouth, staring at me as if I had sprouted horns right in front of her.
It took her three full seconds to process what had just happened.
"You psycho bitch!" she shrieked, spraying crimson flecks. "I’m gonna rip your throat out! Get her!"
Her two sycophants surged forward, fists clenched, desperate to prove their loyalty.
"Host! You must follow the script! Take the blows!"
I almost smiled. The script called for a beating? Fine. Let’s see who gets beaten.
The first punch swung wild toward my temple. I slipped under it with a theatrical shudder, ducking left, then swaying right. The space between the sinks and the stalls was suffocatingly tight, yet somehow, none of their knuckles could find my skin. They clipped the hem of my cardigan, grazed the breeze off my shoulder, but caught nothing solid.
"Stop! Please, just stop hitting!" I shrieked, pitching my voice into a breathless, helpless whimper.
"Thud."
Behind me, a sickening crunch echoed.
Phoebe—the quiet girl who had spent the last ten minutes pretending to be a piece of furniture while I took the initial heat—caught a heavy combat boot squarely in the ribs.
I suppressed the urge to laugh. Phoebe was a coward wrapped in self-pity. In the original script, Virginia took the fall for her, took the beating, and when dragged to the principal's office, Phoebe boldly lied through her teeth, claiming it was all just "playful banter" and that Virginia was an interfering busybody. Virginia absorbed all the scars; Phoebe walked away clean.
Not today.
Every time a fist came hurtling my way, I executed a subtle pivot. Every missed strike landed with visceral momentum right onto Phoebe, who was cowering behind me, trapped in the corner.
"Crunch." Another kick found her stomach. Phoebe let out a wet, strangled gasp, doubling over.
The more frantically I "dodged," the wilder and harder the bullies swung. By the time the hall monitor and a vice principal kicked the restroom door open, Phoebe was on her knees, coughing up flecks of blood onto the cracked tile.
On the long walk to the main office, Phoebe burned a hole into the back of my neck with a venomous, tear-streaked glare.
I ignored her completely, casually humming a jazz tune under my breath as if strolling through a coastal resort.
"Host, due to your blatant deviation from the predetermined plot, disciplinary action is imminent."
I slowed my pace. "What kind of punishment?"
"Class-Three Neuro-Electric Shock."
"Don't be ridiculous," I replied smoothly. "I did get hit. My cheek is glowing red. And if we’re being technical, her mouth violently assaulted my fist. That counts as physical contact under any legal definition."
A burst of static crackled in my head. The system went mute, thoroughly out-argued.
We were barely inside the principal’s office when the heavy oak door was kicked open.
A burly, weathered man barged in. Darren—my character’s biological father.
The household dynamics were a textbook portrait of suburban misery: a compulsive gambler for a father, a sadistic stepmother, a golden-child half-brother, and Virginia, the domestic punching bag. Virginia’s biological mother had skipped town years ago, and Darren had spent every day since punishing Virginia for looking like the woman who abandoned him.
He reeked of cheap malt liquor and stale tobacco. I swallowed the bile rising in my throat and subtly took a step back.
"Mr. Hawthorne, thank God you’re here," the principal began, adjusting his tortoiseshell glasses. "We have a rather serious—"
"Whatever she broke, she pays for it! If she started a fight, expel her, lock her up, I don't give a damn!" Darren barked, cutting him off before he could draw breath.
The principal rubbed his temples, visibly exasperated. "Please, lower your voice. Let us hear what the students have to say first."
According to the original plot, this was Phoebe's cue to throw me to the wolves. Except in the original text, Phoebe looked pristine. Today, she looked like she’d been through a meat grinder, her face swollen into a grotesque, purple mosaic.
"Principal Whitmore," Phoebe wheezed, her voice thick and trembling, "we were… we were just messing around. Virginia completely misunderstood. She went crazy and knocked Brittany’s tooth out."
Even a blind man could see she’d been brutalized, yet she still choked out the lie just to keep herself in Brittany’s good graces.
I turned my head slightly, catching her eye. She flinched, shrinking back into her collar.
Brittany’s two lackeys immediately chimed in with frantic nods. Brittany herself—now looking remarkably frail—dabbed at her mouth with a bloody tissue, putting on an Oscar-worthy performance of wronged innocence.
Darren didn't waste a second. With a guttural roar, he lunged across the rug, his thick, calloused hand reaching to grab a fistful of my hair to force me onto my knees.
In the original story, Virginia was dragged to her knees in front of the entire room, battered and humiliated until she fainted from internal bleeding.
As his fingers closed in, I took a crisp half-step to the left.
Darren’s forward momentum was unstoppable. His palm missed my skull and clamped down on the crown of the principal’s head. With a harsh, tearing sound, he ripped the principal's meticulously glued toupee clean off his scalp.
The principal froze, his bare, shiny dome gleaming beneath the fluorescent tubes.
Then, absolute fury erupted across his face. "Mr. Hawthorne!"
Darren, who only ever knew how to bully women and children, instantly turned into a trembling coward. He held the synthetic hairpiece in both hands like a dead rodent, stammering apologies as he tried to hand it back.
The principal snatched the hairpiece, violently jamming it back onto his head sideways.
I couldn't help it. A dry, amused snort slipped past my lips.
Every eye in the room whipped to me. Principal Whitmore looked ready to burst a blood vessel. "Virginia! Assaulting a classmate without provocation warrants immediate expulsion. I am giving you one final chance: you will stand before the entire student body at tomorrow's assembly and read a three-thousand-word letter of self-reflection and apology."
I scanned the room, meeting the smug, victorious smirks on Brittany and her cronies.
"I witnessed Brittany and her circle physically cornering and assaulting Phoebe," I said, my tone ice-cold and measured. "I acted strictly in self-defense and defense of another."
"Phoebe?" the principal barked. "Is this true?"
Phoebe twisted the hem of her skirt, biting her bruised lip. "No, sir… nobody touched me. Virginia just… she just attacked Brittany unprovoked."
I narrowed my eyes at her, letting the dead, predatory chill in my gaze settle over her skin. Phoebe visibly shuddered, suddenly sweating.
"Fortunately," I drawled, reaching calmly into my blazer pocket, "I don't rely on the testimony of cowards."
I pulled out my phone. From the second the system briefed me in the restroom, I had hit record.
Brittany’s smug expression dissolved into sheer panic. "Wait! Principal Whitmore, this is just a minor misunderstanding! We should handle this privately, without involving the school board!"
I tilted my head, offering a razor-sharp smile. "Trying to tuck your tail now? Too late."
As my thumb hovered over the playback icon, an agonizing jolt of electricity ripped through my chest.
My soul wasn't fully tethered to this body yet; the system's shock multiplied a hundredfold, searing through my nerves like liquid fire.
"Host has committed a severe plot violation. Escalating disciplinary voltage."
My jaw locked. Blood rushed to my ears, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Pain?" Please. I’ve survived things that would turn this little artificial intelligence into ash.
I slammed my thumb down.
The audio blasted through the office speakers: my mock-pleading cries to stop, the sickening thuds of boots against ribs, and the distinct sound of Brittany instructing her crew to hold Phoebe down.
Phoebe’s face drained of what little color it had left. Brittany instantly panicked, throwing her two lackeys under the bus to save her own skin.
"Warning! Critical divergence from primary plotline! Punishment amplified!"
I didn't blink.
By the time the dust settled, Brittany’s two accomplices were facing formal expulsion, Brittany was assigned the public confession at the assembly, and Phoebe—though caught in a blatant lie—was hurried off to the emergency clinic for internal bruising.
As Brittany brushed past me in the hallway, she leaned in, hissing through her missing tooth: "You’re dead, Hawthorne. Watch your back."
I tilted my chin, meeting her gaze with a lazy, venomous smirk.
Nobody threatens me and lives to brag about it.
Besides, in a fictional world like this... who’s going to notice if a spoiled brat quietly vanishes into thin air?
