"Quincy, please hurry up and leave the bathroom. I need to shower too!" Wendy's frustrated voice came from behind the door, accompanied by insistent knocks. "Just give me five more minutes!" I yelled back, almost finished dealing with the aftermath in the bathroom. After a moment, I unlocked the door and let Wendy in. She immediately recoiled at the odor. "Goodness, what's that smell?!" "My stomach had a war with some spicy snacks," I admitted, feeling a bit embarrassed about the ordeal. Wendy, exasperated, advised, "Maybe ease up on the spicy food, seriously." I protested, "Snacks are my comfort food. Without them, life is dull." Rolling her eyes, Wendy reminded me, "Well, we need to leave soon. We're going to be late." I checked my phone and realized we had an hour left before we needed to head to the airport. I was taken aback by how much time had passed. Unperturbed, Wendy instructed, "Get ready quickly. I'll start the car." I rushed through getting ready, trying to make up for the lost time from my bathroom adventure and last night's snack binge. As I finished packing, my wolf companion Zadie chimed in, teasing me about the rough start to the day. 'My, what a wonderful start to a not-so-great morning, huh?' she quipped. 'Shut it, Zadie,' I responded, a bit grumpily. Zadie just chuckled before severing our mental connection. ... Eventually, we made it to the gates, thanks to the generous flight attendants who allowed us in despite being a few minutes late. A mix of relief and embarrassment washed over me as I realized we had caused a brief delay for the entire plane. Wendy and I quickly settled into our seats as the flight attendants went through safety instructions. I found myself observing the humans around, finding amusement in their reactions and mannerisms. However, boredom soon set in, and I tried to engage Wendy in conversation, only to discover she had already fallen asleep. Typical Wendy, falling asleep in record time. Our flight was taking us from the US to Canada, specifically from Florida to our old pack's territory in Canada. I couldn't help but let out a sigh, hoping that my mate would be there. Visiting the pack was rare for me, and now, at 23 years old, I was still without a mate. The uncertainty gnawed at me. Was my mate still in the pack? Could they be in another pack in a different country? The possibilities left me anxious. I reached out to Zadie, my wolf, through our mental link, seeking reassurance. "Zadie, what if we don't find our mate? What if—" 'Quincy,' she interrupted in a scolding tone, 'there's no use in dwelling on what-ifs. It's a path to unnecessary worry and trouble.' 'I'm just worried,' I confessed, my anxiety evident. Zadie sighed, 'I share your worry, Quincy. But I truly believe our mate is out there. I can sense it. I've been restless lately.' I hoped she was right. 'I trust you, Zadie,' I responded. 'Good, because I'm always right,' she replied confidently. 'Well, reluctantly, yes,' I said with a hint of sarcasm. Smirking, I severed the mental link and took a deep breath, gazing out the window. Let's hope for the best, but something in me was certain that something wasn't quite right.

"We're here! Oh, sweet Canada! I'm so glad to be home!" Wendy exclaimed, throwing her hands up in the air and taking a deep breath of the fresh Canadian air. Werewolves truly appreciated solid ground after being in the air for a while, so her enthusiasm wasn't surprising. The flight had been exhausting, and I was ready to rest. Wendy's excitement about returning to our old home was contagious. If I found my mate here or nearby, we planned to use our old home as a vacation spot. But if I didn't, I'd likely return to the US. Watching Wendy's excitement sparked a mischievous idea. Smirking, I decided to have a little fun at her expense. "Hate to interrupt your party, Wendy, but you've got a little drool there. And your makeup? Well, it's not exactly runway-ready. You look like the clown you truly are," I teased, pointing at the edge of her mouth and gesturing to her face. Wendy froze, panic flashing in her eyes. "What?! Where? Why didn't you tell me earlier, Quincy! Oh god! Help me! I don't want Blaze to see me like this!" We were waiting for Blaze, Wendy's mate, to pick us up. Their relationship had faced challenges when we were younger, but they had overcome them and were deeply in love now. I still remembered the rocky road they had traveled, and it wasn't easy for me to forgive him back then. But I was grateful he was Wendy's mate. As Wendy worried about her makeup, I pretended to inspect my nonexistent ring on my ring finger, masking a hint of sadness with a playful act. "Shouldn't have left me bored to death with those humans, Wendy." She shot me a glare. "Is this a prank?" "What? No, of course not. Why would I do something like that to my best friend?" I replied, feigning innocence. "Oh, come here, you!" she playfully growled before chasing me in small circles. Truthfully, her makeup was perfectly intact, and there was no drool. But it was all in good fun. Our playfulness was interrupted by a deep voice, and Wendy froze. "I see you haven't changed," the voice said. Wendy slowly turned to face him, whispering, "Blaze?" I shifted my attention to where she was looking, and indeed, it was Blaze—tall, with gray eyes, brown hair, and a perfectly muscled physique. Blaze had a presence that exuded strength and confidence, as all werewolves did, displaying natural beauty and strength. Wendy, on the other hand, sported hazel eyes and brunette hair, looking remarkably well for her age of 26, while Blaze was 27. The moon-goddess had blessed everyone in our pack with extraordinary looks—it was almost as if she had a penchant for creating stunning beings. I couldn't help but imagine the envy of the humans watching us; they saw us as ordinary, not realizing we were supernatural. Lost in my thoughts, I suddenly noticed Wendy rushing into Blaze's arms, tears streaming down her face. It had been six months since they last saw each other, a difficult separation for both of them. The pain of being apart from your mate was a unique kind of torture; it felt like a part of you was missing, an unbearable yearning. As they reunited, their kisses and tender whispers began, which I didn't mind at first. However, as their passion escalated, it started to become uncomfortably heated. Their public display was drawing too much attention. "Okay, I hate to interrupt this lovely reunion, but perhaps we could save the more intense displays of affection for a less public setting. The humans are starting to notice," I whispered in complaint, just loud enough for the two of them to hear. Blaze and Wendy reluctantly broke apart, their eyes now pitch black with desire. With a wink from Blaze to Wendy, and the word, later from her, I knew they would be going down and doing the dirty after we arrive to the pack house. These damn horny wolves. I'm the single one here! "My poor virgin eyes... it's like Twilight in action, only that it's way worse,' I complained, rubbing my temples. Maybe this resembles Fifty Shades of Grey? 'You'll understand when you meet our mate,' Zadie replied softly. I clicked my tongue when Zadie said that. Yeah, if we meet him. ... After another three hours of driving, we finally reached our destination. I was beyond exhausted and just wanted to doze off. Blaze and Wendy hurried off elsewhere, probably making up for lost time, if you catch my drift. Ahh, must be nice to not be single in this lonely world of ours. Shrugging off my envy, I entered the complex with my luggage. It was beautiful, resembling a classic celebrity mansion, much like the pack house I remembered from years ago. It was an exact replica of the pack house before the tragic fire. I hadn't visited much since my parents passed away in the attack, and a wave of sadness washed over me before I pushed it aside. Once I found my old room, I started settling down. The bed was almost the same as I left it, but I could tell the bedding had been changed. I sniffed the air and realized Blaze must have done that. I was truly grateful he was Wendy's mate. Levi had been such an unpleasant memory. I sighed, burying my face into the pillow, and just when I began to doze off, my stomach growled, demanding food. I couldn't sleep on an empty stomach. Groaning, I sat up and went downstairs to the kitchen. But my groans turned to frustration when I realized I had forgotten my phone. I cracked my knuckles out of habit and headed back to my room. As I trotted up the stairs, a particular scent hit me like a brick—it was that ocean cologne from Bath and Body Works, a scent I now favored. Zadie began pacing back and forth, intoxicated by the fragrance. The scent grew stronger the closer I got to the top of the stairs. It was coming from the next two floors up. It was too alluring, and my wolf was practically begging me to follow it. How had I not noticed this scent before? It seemed like whoever it was had just returned from patrolling. I followed the captivating scent, and it led me to the Alpha's office. But why would the scent be coming from there? Before my hand could reach the knob, the door swung open with a bang. I looked up and found myself staring into the most mesmerizing sky blue eyes. At that moment, Zadie went haywire in my mind. 'MATE! MATE! MATE!' she screamed. My breathing hitched, eyes dilating in disbelief. No way... "K-Kayden...?"

'Wait a minute, isn't Kayden the Alpha's and Luna's son? You do realize what that makes me, right, Zadie?' I thought, a mix of surprise and realization settling in. 'Obviously a Luna, duh. Regards to that, our uterus is ready. Let's have sexy time with our mate,' Zadie purred, clearly distracted by her own desires. 'You're horny as hell, listen to me!' Mentally sighing, I acknowledged that Zadie wasn't in a state to listen. She was too preoccupied with the allure of Kayden and his wolf. Kayden, however, remained silent, his eyes fixed on me as if he were admiring me from afar. Admittedly, I found myself appreciating his appearance from every angle. But I had to reel in my thoughts; this wasn't a fantasy. It was a real-world situation, and inappropriate thoughts bordered on sexual harassment. He wore a white T-shirt that emphasized his bulging muscles, and his fluffy brown hair made me wish to run my fingers through it. The moon goddess had indeed made my mate exceptionally attractive. Maybe now I understood why Wendy and Blaze couldn't keep their hands off each other. I had a strong urge to squeeze Kayden's bicep. Clearing my throat, I refocused on reality. "... Hi, my name is Quincy. I'm a pack member who went abroad. I just returned today, hoping to find my mate. Little did I know, you're my mate," I said awkwardly, rubbing my neck. 'Real smooth, human, real smooth,' Zadie grumbled, rolling her eyes. 'Quiet you! I'm trying!' Growing frustrated, I cut the mental link again, wondering why Kayden hadn't responded. Could he be shy? If so, that would be endearing. Shy men were one of my favorites, especially when they blushed. Kayden continued to give me a peculiar look. Was I gawking at him or something? His prolonged stares made me lose my confidence, and I nervously laughed, "Sorry, I'm... um... you're hotter than any other man I've met, so I'm kinda flustered. My wolf is all... excited and keeps telling me that my uterus is ready for mating," I blurted out, trailing off in embarrassment. "He arched an eyebrow, clearly amused by my behavior. Why was he still silent? I longed to hear my mate's voice, damn it! "Are you shy?" I inquired softly. He shook his head, indicating he wasn't. Okay... so if he wasn't shy, why wasn't he speaking? It was odd. Worry started to creep in. This was my first encounter with someone who remained so silent, especially a mate; it was unheard of. I wished I could mind-link with him this time, but there were conditions to mind-linking, especially with your mate. Mating and marking were prerequisites for a mind link, and we needed to be in the same pack. This exclusivity made the bond more significant, setting it apart from linking with others. It required hard work and effort. As far as I knew, neither of us had mated or marked the other. We were simply in the same pack. It was frustrating. Letting out a sigh, I blinked at Kayden. Was he playing a little trick on me? Did he want me to play along with him to hear his voice? I believe he finally understood my confusion because he pointed to his neck. Even more puzzled, I asked, "What's wrong with your neck?""

"Who's 'her?'" I asked softly, tears streaming down my cheeks. My mate is mute... I can't believe it. Damn hormones are making me cry. Kayden extended his hand to my cheek, gently wiping away more tears. His touch caused a pleasant tingle, making me smile at his warmth. This, indeed, confirmed that we were mates. Zadie was howling, overjoyed with being touched by our mate. Kayden then continued to write on the notepad's page, and wrote, 'My mother.' His mother? Wasn't that Luna Yvette? If my memory served me right, she was the sweetest Luna I remembered. The pack only grew strong and powerful under her rule alongside the Alpha. "Why would she do such a thing?" I asked, growing increasingly worried. This time, though, he didn't answer. Based on his body language, he didn't want to. Kayden seemed slumped, his shoulders hunched over in shame. But why? After a series of attempts, Kayden still refused to answer my questions about his mom. Deciding that it was useless and that I would probably be doing more harm than good, I changed the subject to getting to know my mate more. "Did you choose to be mute, or is it because your mother did something?" He quickly wrote, "She did something." I nodded, asking, "What's your favorite color? Mine is actually not a color; it's a shade. It's black." He gave a small grin and wrote, 'White.' Gosh, his smile is so adorable. "Age?" I asked, curious. He replied in writing, '22.' The rest of the evening played out like that, and I absolutely loved it. Besides Zadie being amorous, everything was perfect. He was perfect. I never thought having a mate could be this enjoyable, and I wished it would never end. Or so I thought. ... That evening, I joined the pack for dinner and took a seat next to Kayden. Despite some initial surprise from the pack members, they welcomed me warmly. However, there was one she-wolf, Macy, who seemed to harbor resentment. If my memory served me right, Macy was Kayden's ex. Their relationship had been short-lived, but it appeared she was struggling to let go. Was she jealous? I couldn't be certain without asking. I caught her whispering to another pack member, criticizing my appearance and claiming I wasn't fit to sit next to Kayden. Seriously? Growing tired of the disrespect, my wolf wanted to confront Macy and find out why she was glaring at us. "Do we have a problem, Macy?" I demanded, my authority clear in my tone. The room fell silent as the pack members turned their attention to the unfolding confrontation. Macy's glare softened for a moment before narrowing further. "No, Luna. Everything is just peachy," she spat out, clearly annoyed. Disregarding her disrespect, I was determined to understand her grievances. As the new Luna and a motherly figure to the pack, it was my duty to address concerns. "Is that so? Then would you like to explain why you keep glaring at me?" I asked, my hand under my chin. I wanted to spend more time alone with Kayden, not assume Luna duties right away. But circumstances had changed overnight. Macy snapped, standing up and slamming her hands onto the table in frustration. "I keep glaring at you because you don't deserve to be Luna! You just appear out of nowhere and act like the pack house is your kingdom!" I frowned, taken aback. "Excuse me?" Her eye twitched. "Exactly as I said! Do you even know why the Alpha is mute? Were you even there when he needed you most? Huh? Or are you that oblivious to what's going on around you?" Her words left me speechless. I didn't have all the answers, and I lacked the knowledge of what had truly happened to my mate besides the fact that it had something to do with his mother. Macy was right in some aspects, but I couldn't let her words slide. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is our future Luna. This is who we're entrusting the pack with. If it were up to me, I'm more qualified to be Luna. She doesn't even know a thing about our al-" A loud bang cut through the air as the table shook. I turned to Kayden and saw his eyes pitch black, not in arousal but in anger. His wolf was trying to surface, wanting to protect his mate. I reached out and ran my hands along his arms, attempting to soothe him. Sparks ignited between us, and warmth filled my body. He flinched a bit at my touch but gradually calmed down. He clenched his jaw, his eyes clouding over. I realized he was using the mind link. Judging by Macy's reaction, with her biting her lip and eyes clouded over too, he was communicating with her. Macy looked down in shame and apologized to me. I accepted her apology, but her words continued to echo in my mind. Dinner was silent and uncomfortable, prompting me to finish quickly before retreating to my room. I felt heartbroken, and although I understood Kayden' reasoning, I wanted to help him. "I'm so useless," I whispered, and Zadie reassured me, 'Don't bring yourself down like that, girl. He will tell us eventually.' I nodded, trying to find comfort in her words. A knock on my door made me jump, and I quickly composed myself before opening it to find Kayden with a concerned gaze. I allowed him in and asked, stumbling over my words, "Something you need? Do you want me to stay with you?" I blushed at my own words. I needed to filter myself. This was embarrassing. Zadie seemed eager, but Kayden blushed and shook his head, tentatively caressing my cheek as if asking, 'Are you okay?' Offering a half-smile, I replied, "I'm fine. Thank you for coming to see me and for what you did back there. I was going to say something, but you beat me to it." I thought he would leave right after, but he held out a hand-picked rose he had hidden behind him and offered it to me. My eyes widened in surprise, and my heart squeezed tight. It was clear he had hurt his hand a little since roses have thorns. It seemed he had never picked flowers before. "Is that for me?" He nodded, rubbing the back of his head shyly. Overjoyed, I impulsively kissed him on the cheek. Kayden froze at the direct contact but a small blush formed on his cheeks, making me giggle. He was so adorable. He took out his notepad and started writing quickly. Turning it over, it said, 'I will tell you someday, but not now. I'm sorry.' I smiled sheepishly, "It's okay. You don't have to apologize. Tell me when you're ready." Kayden left my room after that, leaving me puzzled. Why wouldn't he want me to sleep next to him? Typically, mates would mark each other on the first day they met. However, Kayden was different. He kept me at an arm's length, as if cautious of me. The real question remained: What had Luna Yvette done to make my mate mute?

第5章

"Human! Wake up!" Zadie urgently shouted. Startled, I jolted awake to a cacophony of screams and crashing sounds. The pack house seemed to be under attack. Blinking to adjust to the light, I scrambled out of bed, Zadie's urgent pleas echoing in my mind. "Go to mate. He needs us. Go," she whimpered. Without hesitation, I threw on a robe to ward off the chilly morning air. As I rushed through my morning routine, the commotion outside intensified. My mate wasn't in his room, adding to my growing unease. The chaos led me to his office, where a disheveled woman reeking of alcohol was unleashing a tirade of profanities and violence. My mate cowered in the corner, a victim of her wrath. Enraged and fueled by Zadie's growls, I felt my wolf instincts taking over. The woman advanced menacingly towards my mate, brandishing a broken bottle. Acting on instinct, I intervened, gripping her wrist to stop her assault. The woman, Luna Yvette as she claimed, slurred in protest, reeking of alcohol. The metallic scent of blood grew stronger, fueling my outrage. Zadie's growls reverberated through me, and I could feel the transformation taking place within me, claws extending. Swiftly, I intercepted the woman's next attack, seizing her wrist. She turned, shocked at my sudden intervention, but her surprise twisted into a sneer as she dropped my mate, Kayden, to the ground. "Who are you?!" she slurred, struggling against my grip, her breath reeking of alcohol. My eyes narrowed with anger. "I'm the Luna of this pack. Who are you and how dare you touch my mate," I seethed, digging my claws into her skin, drawing blood. I was consumed by a desire to punish her for the pain she had inflicted on Kayden. Her scowl deepened, protesting her innocence. "You? Luna? I'm the Luna of this pack!! Do you have any idea who I am! I am Luna Yvette! HOW DARE YOU—" Releasing her wrist, I lunged at her, aiming for her throat, slamming her to the ground. My wolf wanted blood, and hers seemed the only appropriate retribution. "Luna Yvette, you said? That's a good story, but in what chapter do you shut the hell up?" I hissed. This woman bore little resemblance to the graceful Luna Yvette I remembered from years ago. I scoffed, tightening my grip around her throat as she struggled for breath. "Get off me, you bitch! It hurts! Let go!" she screamed, her voice grating on my nerves. I wanted to succumb to my rage, to let my wolf have its vengeance, but I knew the consequences. Killing her would condemn me to pack jail, and I couldn't risk losing Kayden's affection by committing such an act in front of him. I held back, allowing her to fall unconscious but still alive. Zadie urged me to end her, but I resisted. Slowly, I got up, my body aching from the struggle. Blood trickled down the side of my head, a reminder of the brutality we had just faced. I knew time was crucial, the scent of our blood could alert the pack. I winced, feeling the pain shooting through my arms. The injuries were throbbing, and the gash on my head was bleeding. The scent of copper filled the air, a stark reminder that time was of the essence; our mingled blood could alert the entire pack house. Shifting my attention back to Kayden, huddled in fear in the corner, I cautiously approached, avoiding the debris strewn across the floor. His body bore recent cuts and bruises, evidence of the brutal encounter. "Hesitantly, I reached over and tried to touch Kayden. He only started to shake harder, slapping my hand away in fear. The contact echoed in the room and Zadie howled in pain, wanting to help him. I only felt hurt for an instant, but I knew it wasn't his fault. He's scared. "Kayden... I promise I won't hurt you. I'm only here to help. Let me help, please," I pleaded, tears welling up once more. His rejection hurt, but I understood the trauma he was facing. Despite his apprehension, he tentatively reached out his hand, and I pulled him into a comforting embrace. He initially tensed, but as he felt the reassuring connection, he let out broken sobs, finally allowing his vulnerability to surface.

I held him close, offering the comfort he needed. It was a relief to be there for him in this moment of pain and fear. As he slowly calmed down, he leaned back, his eyes meeting mine. He was still breathtaking even after the emotional release. I blushed at the closeness, realizing I was sitting on his lap. Feeling self-conscious, I quickly wiped away a stray tear from his face, sparks flying between us. The tension of the moment was broken by Blaze's arrival. "Jesus Christ, what the hell happened here?" Blaze's voice disrupted our peaceful interlude. Assuming his new position as Beta, Blaze looked down at the unconscious Yvette. "You could have just taken out the trash fully. I would have done it myself if I had known she had gotten out," he muttered, dissatisfied. I rolled my eyes at his remark. "Is that all you have to say? Get the pack doctor." "He's already on the way. More importantly, Alpha, are you alright?" Blaze asked, concern in his voice. Kayden, who had transformed from my 'chair' to a shy figure, nodded. I tried to divert my thoughts, realizing that the earlier awkward position on his lap had changed. Zadie's playful comment made me blush even more. The chaos seemed to settle, but our journey to recovery was just beginning. Clearing my throat, I sat up, realizing Kayden seemed disappointed. I was puzzled; he had been shy just moments ago. What had changed? Shrugging off my confusion, I turned my attention to Blaze, who was waiting for an explanation. "So, care to tell me what just happened?" he inquired, standing in front of us. Frustration and sadness welled up within me as I recounted, "His mother happened. I put her fucking ass in place. That's what she gets for laying her hands on my mate," I gestured towards Yvette's unconscious body on the ground. Blaze appeared lost in thought before turning to Kayden. "Shouldn't you tell her, Kayden? Your mother escaped because the guard wasn't doing his job properly. Fucker took some alcohol she offered and passed the hell out. I don't know how she bribed him, but he apparently just turned 16 years old and was excited to drink with a Luna. He snuck into the cabinets full of alcohol in the pack and gave it to her. It seemed like she promised him that she would make him alpha or something if he let her have some alcohol. Since he is a new guard, he must have grown greedy. He's that rogue we took in a week ago." I frowned, connecting the dots. "And I'm assuming, since he knows she's the Luna, he thought he had a chance of being alpha if he mated with Yvette... and since she only requested for alcohol, he made another assumption that she was stupid and easy. Seeing that he had little chance to lose and was a rogue originally, he just went along with it. I mean, getting alcohol is easy, but obtaining the title of Alpha is difficult. Probably thought this was too good to be true but did it anyway." "Exactly. I had to interrogate the hell out of him since he was the one in charge of watching her. You see, letting him into the pack was my fault, so I'll deal with him. I thought everyone deserved a second chance like how Wendy gave me, but it wasn't meant to be with him." To clarify, Yvette was still the Luna because the ceremony for my becoming Luna hadn't taken place yet. In our werewolf tradition, when the offspring of an alpha finds their mate, the title shifts from the old couple to the new one, placing it on their offspring and their mate. This rogue thought he could become alpha if he helped Yvette get alcohol, assuming that aligning with her would give him a better chance at the alpha position. Drifting out of my thoughts, I refocused on Kayden, who seemed lost. He only nodded at Blaze's and my words, granting Blaze permission to elaborate further. Just then, the pack doctor rushed in, a mix of shock and concern on his face. He tended to our injuries and advised Kayden to rest for a day for the wounds to heal. Werewolves were blessed with fast healing abilities. After helping Kayden to bed, I returned to my bedroom with Blaze following. "Ready to hear about Kayden?" Blaze cautiously asked, taking a seat in my room. Anxious, I nodded, signaling him to begin.

"You might want to sit down for this, Quincy," Blaze said, settling into the chair in my room. "I rather stand. Don't worry about me and continue," I replied, my mind focused on the gravity of the situation. Blaze blew out a steady breath. "I'm going to try to tell you as fast as possible. Given the situation, Kayden should be the one telling you all this. However, he's mute. The day he tells you is the day he should start writing books for a living." I wasn't sure whether to laugh or be frustrated with Blaze's humor at such a moment. My wolf, Zadie, expressed her own discontent, but I chose to let it pass. Blaze meant well, and he had his own unique way of coping with serious situations. "Right, that's true. So cut to the chase," I urged, signaling for him to continue. There were more pressing matters at hand than Blaze's sense of humor. "Around the time your parents passed away, you came back for their funeral. The pack house was burned down by rogues, and we lost many of our pack members. You grieved for months and right after the funeral, you went back to your other home in Florida since you didn't want to be reminded of the past," Blaze recounted, pausing briefly. "You wanted no contact from the pack, so we left you be. You rarely visited and only stayed on the outskirts of where the humans were. Just think, if you had actually come to the pack house, you might have found Kayden sooner." I chuckled bitterly, reflecting on the past. "Yeah, well, life can be one hell of a ride. Even so, I met him, and now we're mates. I regret not coming here sooner, and even though I'm here, I still feel the pain of their deaths. I miss them, but I've learned to cope with my parents not being here. When I saw the pack, I felt a slight sting, but it wasn't as bad. I don't know what I was so scared of." "Change, perhaps? We never want to step out of our comfort zone. Maybe if you had come to the pack house, it would have meant acknowledging their passing and that time has moved on with or without you. We never like to get out of our comfort zones, but once we do, we feel a little more fearless," Blaze mused, crossing his legs. His words hit the mark, resonating deeply with my thoughts. I approved of his insight, and I was glad he was Wendy's mate. They had both gone through struggles and had come out stronger. Bringing us back to the present, I asked, "Now, what does that have to do with Kayden?" "Quincy, you didn't want any contact from the pack since you needed time to grieve for your parents. Because of that, Wendy stayed by your side for a long time. Although she visited me, she never went to the pack house. Honestly, she doesn't even know what happened to Kayden. It's a secret that he's mute to most of the other packs. I'm his representative and use the excuse that he's busy. We left you in the dark regarding Kayden," Blaze explained. Taking in the information, I nodded, appreciating the straightforwardness and urgency of the situation. It was time to focus on what lay ahead and support Kayden in every possible way.

第8章

Blaze's expression turned cold and sad as he continued, recounting Kayden's past. My anger flared, echoing Zadie's fury at the abuse inflicted on Kayden by his own mother. "He was abused, as you saw today. When the rogues burned down the pack house and kidnapped Kayden, Ouranos went after them. He was outnumbered and ended up slipping into a coma. With Kayden being so young, he couldn't be the alpha just yet. Yvette had to rule the pack herself but decided to use alcohol as a way to cope," Blaze explained. "Her mate was in a coma-like state, and one day, she just snapped. She slapped Kayden when she was drunk but apologized. Soon after, it became a daily thing. Once it became a habit, she stopped apologizing and didn't see anything wrong with it. Now, she sees it as a benefiting punishment for Kayden and blames him for Ouranos's undoing." My anger surged, my eyes swirling black, but I forced myself to stay calm, knowing we needed to be rational and focus on helping Kayden recover. "Why would she blame Kayden? That wasn't his fault. He was a kid who got kidnapped. You don't see him waving a flag around saying he wants to be taken away, do you?" I seethed. Blaze shook his head, explaining the twisted logic behind Yvette's actions. I was sickened by her unfounded blame on an innocent child. "Also, you're telling me that you left me in the dark because I wouldn't be able to take that Kayden was getting abused by his mother and Ouranos is currently in a coma?" I asked, my disbelief evident. Blaze nodded. I sighed heavily, finally taking a seat. "I know you were thinking of my well-being, but I could have stepped in to help Kayden. You know I would have!" He defended their actions, emphasizing how difficult it was to intervene in such a hostile environment within the pack. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound so harsh. It's just... even I couldn't help him. I was ordered to ignore Kayden's suffering. My wolf had to obey her, and to this day, I wish I did more," Blaze admitted, a hint of remorse in his eyes. Frustration and helplessness overwhelmed me. "No, you're right. What you said made sense. How can I help Kayden when Yvette could have just ordered me to do the unspeakable thing to him?" He smiled, relieved that I understood the complexity of the situation. As our conversation neared its end, I asked, "Was this all you needed to tell me?" "Yes. If I remember anything else, I'll let you know." Waving him goodbye, I expressed my gratitude. "Thank you." It was time to focus on helping Kayden heal and reclaim his life from the trauma of his past. ... Hearing what had happened, I couldn't comprehend the depths of cruelty exhibited by Luna Yvette towards her own son and the tragedy that had befallen Ouranos. It was difficult to reconcile the image of the once strong and admirable Luna Yvette with the abusive person she had become. Witnessing what she had done to Kayden only fueled my hatred towards her. I needed to see Kayden. 'Then see our mate. No one is stopping us,' Zadie urged, echoing my own desire. Soon, I found myself in Kayden's room. Quietly sitting on the edge of his bed, I watched him as he slept, his chest rising and falling in a peaceful rhythm. His innocent snores brought a small smile to my face. Examining his arms, I noticed the bruises were fading, and the minor cuts were healing rapidly. However, he seemed to be struggling in his sleep, plagued by a nightmare. I reached out, running my fingers gently through his short hair, attempting to soothe his troubled dreams. He tensed momentarily but soon relaxed as the sparks between us provided comfort. As I tenderly caressed his cheek, a resolve formed within me. I vowed to hold accountable everyone who had inflicted pain on him. Witnessing his current state only solidified my determination. I would protect Kayden and stand by his side, helping him recover and regain his strength. No matter the cost.
